Microsoft Restricts Police Use of AI Facial Recognition

In a significant move aimed at addressing growing concerns over the potential misuse and biases of AI-powered facial recognition technology, Microsoft has updated its terms of service to severely restrict the use of its Azure OpenAI Service by law enforcement agencies.

The new policy, which takes effect immediately, bans U.S. police departments from using the Azure OpenAI Service for any facial recognition applications, including real-time facial recognition on mobile cameras like body-worn or dash-mounted cameras. 

This restriction extends globally, prohibiting any law enforcement agency from using the Azure OpenAI Service for real-time facial recognition to identify individuals in uncontrolled “in the wild” environments.

Exceptions and Limitations

However, the restrictions do not apply to the use of stationary cameras in controlled environments by U.S. police departments. 

This means that law enforcement can still use the Azure OpenAI Service for facial recognition in settings like security checkpoints or surveillance cameras in specific locations, but not for real-time identification of individuals in public spaces.

Addressing Concerns over Bias and Misuse

Microsoft’s decision to limit the use of its AI-powered facial recognition technology by law enforcement agencies reflects growing concerns about the potential for misuse and biases in these systems.
